BootUp PD is announcing this year’s grant opportunity to implement coding at a deserving public school district. Equitable access to computer science and 21st-century skills can help close the gender and diversity gaps in technology. We can accomplish this by making coding available to each and every student.
The grant opportunity will provide an embedded trainer to prepare teachers with the content and pedagogy needed to teach computer science to all elementary students. BootUp PD’s program was developed with Park City School District and has been implemented at districts nationwide. Last year, Kingsport City Schools was selected as the grant recipient. In the northeastern corner of Tennessee, where over half of students receive free or reduced lunch, the program is proving to be tremendously successful in its first year. Dr. Amy Doran, District Coordinator in Kingsport, explains why coding is necessary for her students, “Our students were born into a digital world, so really, they are already using code in everything they do. We want them to learn how to write code so they can thrive with the skills necessary to succeed in the 21st century.”
Teaching computational thinking skills in elementary school develops students into logical thinkers, problem solvers and better communicators. Kingsport Library Media Specialist and recently trained Coding Teacher explains, “If I can give students the tools they need to be learners for the rest of their lives, then I’ve made a difference.”
Applications are requested from school districts nationwide who are committed to providing elementary computer science to students, during the school day, in an equitable way and can commit teacher time to do it.
