Clark Merkley brings to Emerald Data Solutions a wealth of experience as a corporate attorney, insurance professional, human resources executive and President of Employer Solutions Group that won multiple Alfred Sloan Awards for Business Excellence and “Best Companies to Work For.” Clark was an elected school board member for the School District of Kettle Moraine in Wisconsin, a teacher and human resources executive for Nebo School District in Utah, and he has also worked in local government.
Clark began his career as a corporate health care attorney and practiced with large law firms in Portland, Oregon and Chicago, Illinois where he represented hospital systems, physicians and insurance companies in their business and regulatory matters. After several years in private practice, Clark took an in-house legal position with Assurant Health, a $2 billion health insurance company based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and later transitioned to the business side of the organization. He was Senior Vice President of Health Services where he led a team of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, contractors and actuaries. He later became Senior Vice President of Planning and Development where he was responsible for overall coordination of strategic and operational planning. He also led mergers and acquisitions activity for the company.
With a strong desire to “give back,” Clark left the corporate world to join the Nebo School District in north-central Utah, where he taught Algebra, Integrated Science and Law & Government at Springville Junior High. He later served as Assistant Human Resources Director and managed employee benefits for this school district of over 3,300 employees and 25,000 students. Clark continues to volunteer with schools and universities as a guest lecturer, mentor and supporter of public and higher education.
After leaving the school district, Clark was President of Employer Solutions Group, a $260 million professional employer organization (human resources outsourcing company) with over 18,000 worksite employees located throughout the country. With his colleagues, Clark provided human resources, benefits administration, payroll and insurance advice to over 400 clients. Clark also worked as the Deputy Human Resources Director for Utah County Government and understands the needs and demands of local government. Most recently, he was Senior Vice President with Leavitt Group Insurance Advisors, primarily responsible for the production of new middle-market commercial insurance business and human resources.
Clark is very engaged in the local community. Presently, he is the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Project Read, which promotes adult literacy, and is on the board of the Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions Foundation. Clark also serves on the Education Committee of the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Clark is married to wife, Sheryl, whom he met while attending Brigham Young University, where Clark graduated with a B.S. in Zoology. The family then moved to Chicago, Illinois where Clark obtained his J.D. and MBA from the University of Chicago. Clark and Sheryl presently live in Springville, Utah and are the parents of five children and the grandparents of four.
