The Business of Education: Paperless Meeting
Emerald Data Solutions President and BoardDocs Creator Ari Ioannides Discusses the Advantages of "eGovernance" Technology
Paperless board meetings -- using an electronic system for agendas, calendars, and other board materials -- can save organizations thousands of dollars in copying and paper costs, as well as in staff time. The benefits are many, but a paperless governance system requires changes in board culture, and consideration of training, security and legal issues, according to President and Chief Architect of Emerald Data Solutions Ari Ioannides. His company developed the BoardDocs eGovernance system. Ioannides recently talked with ASBJ Editor-in-Chief Kathleen Vail about what board members should know when they’re considering moving to a paperless meeting system. Read More

West Jefferson Hills School District Brings Board Votes to Viewers in Real Time
Residents now will be able to see real-time votes of their elected school board members in West Jefferson Hills, by watching online. The voting feature through BoardDocs was used for the first time last month. As school board members voted during a public meeting using their iPads, Tracy Harris, the district's finance director and board secretary, clicked a key to send the votes to the online agenda. “It was exciting to watch the vote — boom, boom, boom,” said Patty Zeleznick, secretary to the superintendent and office manager, who saw the votes appear on her home computer.
